DSB vrs UGF

I have heard a lot about DSB and UGF for biological filtration. Which is better? If DSB then how deep should i make it and should i add live sand.

I would avoid an UGF if at all possible. Keep in mind that a true DSB needs to be about 6 inches deep and can bring along their own set of problems. I would recommend a 2-3in sand bed with plenty of LR.

Almost no one will recommend an UGF anymore. in fact, most people don't recommend DSB either. As lando says, LR (and a good skimmer) is where it's at.

depends on the size of the tank, and whether it's in-sump or hang on tank

From his\her previous posts lionfishlover stated that he\she has a 40 gal which would fit the skimmers I recommended. I should have stipulated size is an issue but I also feel that “some” research into that area should be done by the fish owner as well.
