Hi, I've been given this tank by a mate, it hasnt been used in over 10 years. I'm just looking for some advice regarding safely cleaning it and what equipment I'll need.
As you can see in the picture theres a filter and some other little bits that I know are related to filtration but I'm not sure how they'd work , maybe someone could help me out with that?
I'm sure they'll need to be replaced, im just not sure what I'm looking for.

Well for one you should toss out that sponge. Any beneficial bacteria on it is long dead so it won't do you any good. You can buy sponge like that in a pet store and cut it down to size.
Clean with diluted vinegar, it should take all the hard calcium build up. Make sure you rinse it after really well.

Is there another picture with more parts? You should have an intake for the filter somewhere.

Also with a tank that size there's not much you can stock it with. If you are interested it might make a cute shrimp tank though.

Naa this is all I got, the previous owner must have replaced the original filter.
Do you know how this top compartment works? To be honest, I'm lost. I was thinking to try and remove it, what do you think?

I know the second picture is where you put the sponge. Maybe try filling it with water, plugging it in and seeing what works.

Is there a brand name anywhere on the tank lid, bottom of tank, bottom of filter

Interpet full pod moon 39litre is the tank model.
I haven't purchased them yet, but I've found replacements for the filtration and figured out how that works and I'm assuming the circle hole on the right side is for a heater to pass through.

The filter I've been given with it works just fine, but it must have been sitting around for 10+ years. Would it be safe to use? Should I use the vinegar solution to clean it? Do I need to find a replacement sponge?
