I'm thinking of getting guppies in a 20 gallon if I don't feed them anything special will some survive on their own? I will have have fern anchored down hornwort float and maybe some water sprite or frog bit.

That will work.. how many will you have to start? You can have up to 20 or more in a 20 gallon tank

I will probably start with 2, male and most likely already pregnant female. A friend of mine has a 100+ ( not very sure ) gal. With oscars that he could feed any extra guppies, I plan on selling them to an LFS.

3:1 is fine. You might be able to do even 2:1, if the males don't chase the females too much, but 3:1 is a good ratio to start with :)

It's good to start with a trio (3) so you don't overpopulated too much..unless you're looking to get the population up quickly.
