Heater sizes

I purchased a 300 watt heater off of eBay for my 20 gallon. Is this going to be to much. I didn't know it was a 300 watt.

The only time a large heater in a small tank is a issue is when it fails, when and if that thing sticks on the fish are literally toast. The normal recommendation is roughly 5w per gallon.

I run a 200 watt in all of my 20 gallon tanks, but I always pay a little more for better brands and don't usually keep them in there longer than 18 months.

I have worked up a trade at my LFS. I'm going to trade for a smaller heater 4 guppies and a thermometer.
