I find this to be the coolest fish I've seen but have never got one... Someone truly told me 1 could go in a 40g with a spotted African leaffish...could I also add a bicher and be done? How big do these 3 fish get? Could there be more tank mates? Any issues here?

I'll probably get slapped on the newest "vent" thread ( ;) ) but...

That person would be wrong. Google is your friend, do a search for those fish and their needs and you will soon see. Just by himself, a 40g is too small for a BGK.

Your profile says "C.Florida". I'm in Titusville. If you are close and ever need help just shout.

Ok thank you!

I believe Leaffish and Birchers both require 50 gallons or more. Some Birchers require more. I would wait for advice from folks that keep these fish.
Brown Knives get big too. A 40 would still be too small.

I was told both are PERFECTLY find by like 4people but I will look into it and I guess I will never own a knife...

Brown knives are much smaller than bgks. Petco says the can go into a 40g minimum but I honestly couldn't see them with a tank let than 55, and I doubt even more that they could be in a 40 with other fish. Petco is just trying to make a sale

I have both fish they are very slow growers. I have a brown knife in a 54g bowfront that has grown an inch in 1yr he was 4 inches now he's 5 inches in a mixed community. Smaller fish being a school of rummy nose tetra.

I have 2 black ghost knives in a 125g. One is 12inches the other is 6inches. I haven't seen any significant growth in 2 years.

I would absolutely recommend a black ghost knife for a 40g. If you got a baby it would be YEARS before you had to upgrade.

I have not owned either a leaf fish or a bichir so ill leave that alone.

I have 4 different sizes of African brown knife fish (came as a set), an 8" bishir,, and a 6" kissing gourami that stays in the top half.

People have warned me that those knifes can turn aggressive but ATM they are very close and school together.

My tank is a 150. I have it hooked up to a Marineland canister that turns over 530 gal an hour. I have plants and room for everyone to have their own space. So far so good. I will rehome to my lfs anyone who becomes a problem.

Those leaf fish are gorgeous but I've heard they eat anything that can fit in its mouth. The knife fish do get big and so does a bichir. I've been told figure 50 gal per knife and bichir. I'd say just research everything you can (heck I might even send you an extra knife sometime lol) and make your habitat fit the fish, not the other way around.

The black ghost knife, I have heard, gets bigger than brown ones. Long ago I had a Senegal bichir who ate my black ghost knife. Took me a long time to trust an eel again . My striped one I have now leaves everyone alone but I suspect he may have killed a little cory I had. I bought a monster of a green one not long ago and the eel does not mess with it.

Pleeeeease do not call Bichirs Eels. Bichirs =/= Eels. Giant pet peeve of mine seeing as Bichirs are my favorite fish.

Sorry for the rant. Haha.

So could I keep

Leaffish
Bicher and or a peacock eel(X2of each?)(1type or other)
What's a good middle? Like angels and discus but not them?

I think you are going to run into some major issues if you attempt this. You are contemplating cramming a whole lot of large, aggressive, messy fish into a very small space. I foresee water quality issues abound and maybe more than a few territorial scraps with bad outcomes. Ultimately it is up to you and they are all very pretty fish but you need to be able to give them the space to become all the fish that they can be. I think you need to be looking at 100+ gallons (preferably bigger) to keep all these guys. I just don't think a 40g is going to cut it. JMO.

So 1 African leaf fish and 1 Senegal bichir and 1-3 more fish is to much in a 40g?

Predfan, I have slipped up and said the E word.

You engineers and all your idiosyncrasies... J/K lol.
