Well I'm sad to report that I was at my nearest Petsmart the other day and they had some Angelfish for sale. Pea sized and short and round finned. :banghead: Not something I would want to buy :( Time for a change.

wednesdays is usually their shipment days around here and lately they've been little ones (or what I'd like to think of as older fry). the small ones I bought wasn't at petsmart tho, but they are growing fast, started feeding them bloodworms this week.

Sadly, there aren't any decent Mom and Pop shops less than 50 miles from me and there is a new Petsmart coming to my town this spring. I just so happened to be in Davenport so I popped in to that store just for kicks. Currently, I am only getting fish from my wholesaler buddy down in Miami when I am there but that's a 400 mile round trip venture for me. I don't do that very often. ;)

OK time to ask the all mighty andy a ? lol home grown micro worms compared to bbs witch is better for fry and fish. i just learned how to make the worms.

( Billowing voice from above says:) Haven't used microworms before, never needed to use them. My fish produced larger fry that could handle newly hatched BBS;) HOWEVER, my buddy doing Angels now has told me that some of the new varieties of Angels are producing fry that are so small that even newly hatched BBS are too big to feed them so he starts them with infusoria for about a week before switching. I'd think that if the microworms are small enough, they could be used in replacement of infusoria. (I'd consider splitting a spawn and using one food on each one and see how they do.)

Now: DISREGARD THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN ! The powerful OZ has spoken! lol :ROFLMAO: ( just kidding ;))

lol ok ty andy ill do it. all my fry are big and start out on bbs so it might work
i was just curious about the witch would be better as far as protein intake.

ok after getting off my lazy but and doing some computer re-surch it looks like bbs wins with more nutritional value. ty

If you can get to use the BBS within the first 6 hours of when they hatch, they are going to be pretty high in protein because they too are still absorbing their own yolk sac. I don't know what the protein value of microworms are. If you find out, you can compare them. That's the deal. You need to experiment at first, yes, sacrificing some fish, so that you can produce more, better healthier fish in the future. That's how I learned ;)

Hope this helps (y)

One of the benefits to microworms is that they live a long time in the water. I put some in a tank yesterday as an experiment and just checked on them. They are on the glass still wiggling. So they live longer which means the water doesn't cloud up as fast. Also allows the fry to "graze" through to the next feeding

The only things I like wiggling in my fry tanks are my fish fry :D :ROFLMAO:

Sorry, I couldn't resist :D

Microworms can live 2 days in the tank. That's what makes them great. Whenever your fry decide they are hungry if they look around there's food. Not something I would eat but hey to each their own. Lol

ok i have been doing an experiment- i have 2 -10 gall tanks with fry in them. one i feed BBS and the other one i took frozen blood worms and flake food and mixed them together in my mini food chopper and fed them. the one with blood worms seam to be growing faster. dose this make sense to anyone.

It might depend on the food values of the flake food you used. Bloodworms are a high protein food that many breeders use to condition many fish for breeding so I can see it being a positive influence on the growth rate. Add to that a growth type flake food and POW, you got growth.
Just be careful that you get fish that grow and are sturdy opposed to grow and are weakened by the rapid growth. Just a thought

good thinking. i also use them for conditioning my breeders. i was just having fun trying new stuff. i will let thease 2 batches grow and see what happens . i just moved a batch of eggs from the orange pearlscale pair and im trying filterd water instead of the meth blue to see if theres a difference also. i also had this tank up and running for 2 weeks with drift wood to lower the ph. i no im weird but im just trying to make healthy big angelfish so trying a few new options.

Nothing weird about trying experiments. The entire Tropical Fish Hobby was built through experimentation ;)
Has anybody used decapsulated brine shrimp eggs to feed newly swimming fry instead of hatching them out? I just saw the cost of my old favorite brand of BS Eggs and almost had a heart attack. lol  Almost 6 times what I paid for my last can

no i haven't yet tried them but i usually either get mine from aquabid or angelspluss. then i got lazy and started using frozen bbs. if u try them let me no the results

I've tried decapsulated brine shrimp eggs. I found they won't touch it if its the first foods but after a couple feedings of hatched brine shrimp they will happily gobble up the decapsulated eggs. I use it the days I open the door to my brine shrimp hatchery and discover I forget to put the eggs in. (Insert face palm. Can't do those on the iPhone app) ;)

Okay Thanks. That's good to know.
I'm just not used to the prices things have gone up to. I had kept the price list I had in my last hatchery for OSI all this time but recently threw it away during a cleanup of my office. The price on it for 15 oz eggs was $15.00. If that doesn't date me, nothing but my metal framed, slate bottomed tank will. :D

One other thing I noticed is for every 1/2 teaspoon of brine shrimp eggs used only 1/8 teaspoon of decapsulated eggs are needed. They seem to go further. So seeing your old prices I can see while guys are getting out. Low margins after expenses. I was lucky enough to get 4 cans for $30 each. Here in Canada I've been finding it at $90+. Crazy. Have been considering looking at New Life Spectrum growth formula as well
