I'm looking at getting an eel for my tank. Had one many years ago and as much as I thought I had the top covered, it found a way out. Just curious what kind of top/lid those with eels are using and add pics of it. Thanks and looking forward to replies.

I just got a snowflake moray and I added some white egg-crate from Home Depot. It is found in the lighting section...white cris-cross plastic used for some overhead lighting panels. Since my snowflake is still small, I cut the egg crate down, put one on top of the other to make even smaller holes and zip tied the two layers. I don't have pics with me.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't think about doubling them up. I'll give that a shot.

Yeah, I did not think about it until I got home, looked at the size of my snowflake and the size of those holes and decided that, at least for now, he was small enough to get through if he wanted. So far so good. He's going into a 240g soon, so I think I'm gonna have to buy more...

I didn't think about a screen. I'll have to check that out. Thanks!

The screens are great, but once he gets big you need to fasten the top down. My snowflake was 24" and knocked the top off with a brick on it.

That didn't occur to me them knocking off a top with a brick, but makes sense. Glad I asked the questions. Thank you!!

Can you lower the water level at all? So that it has less chance of being near the top iv never owned one but im just trying to think lutside the box

I had an aquarium (used as a terrarium) for a snake at one point, it had a tough screen that had a metal frame that clipped down to the edges of the aquarium with a couple metal clips. You could almost lift the tank up by the lid. I would say this would work, it was on a 29 gallon I believe. You could go to petsmart ( I believe I got it there) and see if they have something g like that for the tank you are gonna use.

Sounds like a good thing to check out. Definitely wan an eel, but want don't want to find it on the floor one day. I'm liking the screen idea and possibly doubling up the egg crate as that is what I have on the too now. Many of the eels I've seen for sale are tiny and could get through what I have. I may build a screen frame to go over top of the egg crate and see how that turns out. Thank you!!

Before I read your last part, I was thinking "screen and egg crate combo" too. Great idea, let us know how it turns out!

Not to be a pain, but call them Morays. They have little in common with eels, other than both are fish. Morays are far cooler.
