A cheap sand you can use is pool filter sand, it works well and you can buy it from home depot. when vacuuming you can "swirl" the nozel to pick up waste, in my opinion its easier than gravel
I wanted something I could buy at Walmart, I work there and it would be easier for me to pick it up rather than find a home Depot near me lol not sure if Walmart has that I Googled it but couldn't find it. Can only find play sand.

Play sand works too. Before using it just rinse it in clean water until it runs clear.

Make sure you rinse it well before putting it in your aquarium
best travel to home depot and get the pool filter sand. the playsand is not uniform and will be all over the place , is dirtier and will give you more headaches in the long run

What sort of headaches may they be? Your right filter sand would probably be a cleaner option but play sand still works and he works at wallmart and can get it cheap.
Pool filter sand is graded for a uniform particle size, it doesn't compact like play sand . i have tried both and with the play sand i was netting out floating sand for days. there are both good but if you can get PFS get that or if its just a little more trouble ( not too much ) to get the PFS spend the extra time.

Playsand will work just fine. The trick with it is to wash it REALLY well before you put it in. The more you wash it, the better. It will greatly reduce any clouding or floating sand. A garden hose and a bucket is the easiest way to clean it. It can take awhile to clean, depending on the amount but it is worth spending the time to do it right. When you put it in, use a plate or bowl when filling it with water....

Then rinse, rinse, rinse. It might be easier to wash small portions at a time rather than a full bucket.
Yes, I'll be rising about 250 times haha. I don't want my tank to get mucky.
