Hello everybody, on Friday I will have my sweet 75 gal tank and I am so excited.
Now I need some help for the planning to get it started.
I would like to use sand and gravel in the tank. I know that it will have beside canister filter an under gravel filter with air pump as well. I have no experience with under gravel filter and would like to know how to do it properly...because of the sand.
I ask the seller to not clean the filters. The tank is in use right now and I want to have the bacteria as well...lol
I do not worry about any fancy decoration at this point in time. Just some gravel, sand and one or two plants.
Most important is for me to get my fish as fast as possible out of the 10 gal tank.
With my baby platy I have right now seven Platy and three green emerald cory.
How fast after plugging the new tank in can I move my fish to their new home?
Please let me know of everything that seems important to you to keep in mind. Advice and help is always welcome :)

Hate to say it but you will have to wait at bare MINIMUM, 2-3 weeks

For what? The OP states that the tank is currently in use. Should already be cycled.

OP, I would just set the tank up as quickly as you can and move your fish over. Use your test kit to monitor water quality and do water changes as needed. Even if the tank re-cycles for some reason, it's going to be much easier to keep tabs on water quality than the uphill battle you're probably fighting right now with that fish load in a 10 gallon.

The undergravel filter can't be used with sand.

Good luck! :)

thank you. I figured that the undergravel filter will not work with sand.
I was under the impression that with a tank that is already in use the cycling would go pretty fast and my fish can move over quickly...lets say after 48 hours. That was my plan.
yah I can't handle this drama with my 10 gal tank anymore. All what I am doing is water changes to keep it livable for my fish. It sucks.
One other platy is pregnant right now. Things need to happen now really quickly.

I'd add the fish whenever you set up the tank. There's really no reason to wait 2 days. Just fill with the same temp as what is in your 10 gallon.

Just throw out the under gravel filter they are useless and just raise your nitrates. I used one before and it never worked out.

What I would do since the tank is already cycled just set it all up let it run for an hour or 2 and then acclimate your current fish and let them go haha. I would wait about a week and keep testing water and see how those fish do before adding anymore. What are your stocking plans just curious.

I don't have any stocking plans at this point in time. I just made plans about the landscaping and the cost for it.
All I want now is to give my fish finally a nice and healthy home. And this time I WILL wait, until the water is perfect before adding any more mates. I learned my lesson :hide:
Having a 75gal tank opens up so many opportunities but I have to keep in mind that I am a beginner and have to take things slowly. Now I will start with real plants which includes already a lot of learning :D

Patience as you are learning your way around the hobby will really pay off. :)

Java moss is a great starter plant that will grow in just about any lighting. It will also give your fry some hiding places.

That's cool it's always exciting getting a larger tank! The options open up drastically good luck and nice job being responsible and making sure your tank is cycled for the fish!

That is magnificent! Are you planning on something similar then?

I like layout 49 and 50. I am thinking of creating some kind of green hill on the left side of the aquarium with cavy hiding and resting places at the bottom. Middle of tank mostly sand and some lower growing plants (any ideas?) right side some slate and rock construction with water bubble on gravel. hiha I am having fun

That sounds amazing! I would stick with that idea sounds great!

One more day

I just finished my pick up arrangements for the nice big tank and stand for tomorrow. The guy will let the tank running till I come to get it. We will put the filter in a bucket of water for the ride home so the sweet bacteria will not die. We will also leave the gravel in the tank.
Decorating just doesn't matter right now and can be done later. First I want to get the water in and move my fishies over. Is there anything I need to be careful with during the move from one tank to the other after I made sure that the temperature is right?
I can't wait to see them swimming in there. My corys will probably give me a wonderful water ballet show

Assuming your tap water parameters are close to what you have in your 10 gallon, I'd fill it up and move the fish. Go ahead and temp match for the temp in your 10 gallon. It does not have to be perfect, but it should be close. You can get it close enough just by feel. Be sure to dose enough dechlorinator and you should be good to go. Do stick around and make sure the heater is functioning properly... Just keep an eye on things for at least a few hours after setup. Be sure to use your test kit to monitor water quality until you are sure the tank has cycled through... But I don't anticipate any problems. I've done this many, many times.
