A betta shouldn't be in one. They are surprisingly active swimmers that require a filter and heater. There really isn't anything that could go into a gallon vase IMO... :/

Darn. I knew it was small for a betta. Was just hoping somethong like a sparkling gourami would work but I wasnt sure.

+1 :)

Sorry, I just think 5 gal is as small as you can go. I know, I know - smaller out there but I just think icky (technical term).

Shrimp might be ok...?
Here's an idea... Get a small 5 gal tank, add a betta, and set a potted plant on top ;)

anymore tanks and I will be homeless lol the boss said no!

Ye it just has to be a bowl or vase. I think a 2.5 or 5 gallon bowl would look to big lol

Thank goodness anyways it's another tank, I thought for a horrible second you might have to be down-sizing....

A betta can... My GF keep a betta in a gallon of water since more than 1 years, and it seems fine (but probably not happy). This require 100%WC / weeks, as there's no filtration/cycle.

Don't try a goldfish, it will die fast.

I know it's beautifull, but this is great torture too.

PLEASE don't do goldfish! They are defiantly not good in anything less than 20 gallons (30 preferably! Lol!)

A nice thriving population of daphnia and scuds - then when it gets overgrown you can feed them to your fish.

Thanks yall. It will be inverts only unless I find a really big bosl :)

I had a betta in a one gallon vase on my desk. I didn't know better at the time. I wouldn't call it cruel. We kept each other company. It had a peace lily at the top with roots that dangled down. He would often explore the nooks & crannies of the roots, at a very slow pace. And I'd change his world around every week or so to keep things interesting. Even turning the vase just 90 degrees would change the rooting & lighting to him. He lived for 5 years in it which is pretty good for a betta.

BUT, now I know a little better. I've got a 10g planted aquarium with a female betta and 4 albino cories. The difference in behavior is night & day. She is much more active. Sometimes she swims up & down the length of the tank. Other times she's exploring her much bigger world of plants & driftwood. Every time I'm doing any maintenance in the tank, she's within a couple of inches of my hand, always curious about what is going on.

IMO, a bigger space will bring out more of the qualities of the betta. But if you do go with a smaller space, then you would have to work much harder at enrichment.

Last time I checked these lived in a vase and fish lives in an aquarium?
