I seem to have problems keeping corydoras.
Ive had 5 die in 4months. They all seem to die the same way. They start swimming deformed. The last one i found ill was just floating upsdie down on the top of the water. I boiled some frozen peas and popped the skin off. By the time i did that it had died in the hospital tank.
I have one left. My water paremeters are
Chlorine. 0
Ph. 8.0
Kh. 15°d
Gh. 8°d
Ammonia. 0
Nitrite. 0
Nitrate 25
Teperature is. 25.2°c

I feed them catfish pellets monday, wednesdays and fridays and i feed my other fish hikaria tropical fish micro pellets.
I only have one peppered cory left. I want to get him some friends but im now scared because there is obviously something im doing wrong.
I have two platties, two guppies and 3 danios in my 110 litre tank.

What are you testing your water with? Sounds like a water quality issue. Does this behavior happen after eater changes? How long did you have them prior to spiraling off this mortal coil?

Im using api liquid tests.
Sorry what do you mean eater changes?

And its happened only with the corys. I only started getting them about 4months ago. Ive had all my other fish in that tank for around 9months.

Your Ph is on the high side, but many Cories are farmed and not Wild Caught.

I hope you figure it out. Do you use Salt ?

Nah. I dont use any salt. Because im not sure if it will harm my other fish.

Cory's don't like salt, please don't use it, I did when I was treating another fish and my Cory's hated it.

Ok. I will not do this. Ive put my last remaining cory in a hospital tank now. As he seems to lay still on the bottom but keeps rising. I fear he is heading in the same direction.

Rising? Like floating when he is not trying to move?

Do you think he might have a swim bladder problem? Have you tried treating for bacterial infection? Might want to turn light off too if you have one.

Have all of your cories come from the same place? There have been several stores in my history of fish keeping I have learned to just avoid because everything I ever got from there died within a matter of months. I found one individual store where nothing I purchased from there ever lasted longer then about 3ish months. Sometimes, the issue can be the supply rather than your tank. Just an option worth looking at. At a glance, your tank seems fine. I agree that most regularly available cories shouldn't have an issue adapting to your pH. It is a tad high, but I doubt that is your issue here.

Im in the uk. Do you no what would be best to treat this?

Would this affect the fish if i treat for bacterial problem and that wasnt the problem? Also wouldnt the bacterial infection spread to my other fish? Not just the corys?

Might be a swim bladder problem. But this keeps happening to all my corys.

Also looking at your pictures the cory looks like his barbels are very small...what type of substrate do you use? I had problems with cories getting sick when they hurt or eroded their barbels on dirty gravel, just a thought! I hope he survives!

Here's a pic of my cories and the barbels are quite long even on the small ones. The second pic shows injured barbels on a sick fish, much smaller and you can see that some sort of opportunistic fungus/bacteria took over

I think this was the problem. I have white stones as my substrate. Same as the petshop i got them from.
I wont get any more as i think maybe my substrate is damaging their barbels.
Sadly, i woke up this morning and my fish had died.
I put him in a hospital tank as he was struggling to swim the righ way up. And when he stayed still on the ground he seemed to float up to the top.
So i put him in a hospital tank with plents of aeration and made it so the water surface just covered his body. He lasted 3 days. On the 2nd he seemed alot better but just got worse on day 3 and died by the time i woke up. :(
I wont get these again and ill got to my petstore and let them.know they are giving out the wrong information on these fish.

So sorry you lost a fish.

I'm not sure you answered about your water change routine?

Hi ginty. So sorry you lost the fish, but don't let it discourage you! Cories are great hardy fish when kept in the right conditions and come from a reputable source. We all have trials, errors, and misfortunes in the hobby. I'm sorry I can't offer a definitive answer on what happened.

I think im using the wrong substrate. I cant really afford to change it to sand.
The fact that ive lost 6 in 4months really worries me. I wouldnt really want to buy fish half knowing that they could die because ive got stones for substrate. I do try my very best to look after my tank and fish. Ive got 4 baby platties in another tank that were supposed to go in the big tank this weekend, but im going to leave it now until i know there isnt a problem with the tank.
