Hey guys... I just got $1,000 and well.. lol Time to work on upgrading the discus tank.. Currently im using duel top fin internal 40 filters.. I LOVE these filters..... enough bio media and using fluval polishing pads they work great.. and really quiet... But I want to free up room in my fish tank...

I want to try canister filters... I was also thinking of getting a 20g tank when petco gets there $1 a gallon sale.. and using that as a sort of sump just for extra water volume diluting the nitrates.

Which canister filter is a long lasting.. meaning impeller's don't break aftyer 6 months.. quiet... meaning quieter then any HOB filter and also have good filtration... I may have a good chunk of change.. but I also am still budget conscious.. I was looking at these brands on amazon called Pingkay... 5 stage 525gph canisters.. UV as well.. they look exactly like sunsun canisters... The filter is only $46... without media...

Has anyone used these filters before ? I have read up on fluvals they seem to have impeller issues.. and marineland are noisy and leak.. So im not sure what to get... Some of these canisters... don't seem like they hold much more media then my internals do.. So I want something rather large.. but also needs to be quiet... this is in my bedroom 3 feet from my bed..

Eheim classics
Fluval
SunSun

Those are the 3 main choices. There is more but these are the most common that come to mind.

Eheim and fluval are very quiet.

I was thinking of Eheim.. I used to build and overclock computers and I watercool the cpu's and gpu and I have had the same Eheim pump for the last... got 13 years and its been running non stop for all 13 years pretty much.. and its still quiet and runs good..

The only thing about Eheim classics is I see they don't have any trays ? So how do you put in media ? I guess you just put it in bags and lay it on top of eachother ? Are the canisters big ? The pictures make them look small..

What size canister.. do you recommend for a 44-55g tank ? I don't want too much flow as my 44g tank isn't long and too much flow will blow everything around

Eheim 2217 should be ok.
Or two Eheim 2215's (one each side of tank)
You put media straight into canister. No trays. But also no bypass of filter media. As water enters from the bottom of canister, and exits from the top.
Make sure you get the hose taps with filter. Makes cleaning very easy.
Hope that helps.

That's what im doing in my tank now hense 2 filters.. One on each side.. due to the shape a pentagon.. I dunno if 1 filter is enough to get all the crap in the water out.. but then 2 $80 filters seems like a lot..

So the 2217 for the pentagon should be good ?

If you have managed to get yourself $1000 and your looking to upgrade, don't scrimp. You get what you pay for at the end of the day ? get a fluval 4 series and if the flow is too high point the spray bar at the side of the tank and it will be perfect. If it was me I'd get a fluval fx6.

As you can see there are opinions for different brands. Any one of the filters that SEALIFE recommends will work. I say go for the best deal. Keep in mind with SunSun you will need to purchase media...Fluval and Eheim include media with the filter.

I'd suggest the sunsun canisters... I've run a HW-304A for a year now, 100% silent, no leaks, tons of flow and tons of space to put media (seriously, this thing is huge!) It's also only around $77, they're rated for 525GPH and for that price you can grab 2 or maybe even 3 of them, and get ample filtration!

Hey, I've got a slightly off topic question but still about canisters, and since this thread is a currently hot I thought I'd butt in. I'm Looking at getting a -06 series fluval and I can't tell if the hoses only come off the top straight up or if they're hinged so you can go at an angle. My cabinet only has 18" of height so the straight shot might not work as well.

They come straight up out of the top, I have a 306 and I'd say you'd need at least 19/20" clearance for it to fit comfortably.

Perhaps the 206 is a smaller unit.

Well the FX6 is nearly $400.. lol I may have 1k$ on me.. but that's a bit much.. and my pentagons door is only so big.. Unlike a 30-40-55g long tank where you can fit a person through the doors.. I only have roughly 8-9 inches to get something inside the stand. and an FX6 looks a lot bigger then that..

Where do you guys purchase the eheim 2217 ? Im looking on amazon and I don't see it.. I only see the 2215-2213 and 2211..

Another reason I want a canister is not only to take out the 2 internals I have.. even though I love them don't get me wrong.. with 6 discus, 2 cory, red tail shark, 2 plecos and 26 neon/cardinals, 6 black neons.. And feeding 2-3x a day.. I noticed I get mini spikes of ammonia in the water.. The 2 internals despite having more media room then most HOB's cant handle the bio load my tank is putting out.. I actually had to take a few fish out and reduce feedings to stop the ammonia spikes.

Can a 2217 handle a 50g tank with this many fish and feeding ?

edit: So I am reading eheims are made in china now.. im reading a lot of bad reviews of the eheims.. people say stores no longer carry them anymore due to returns and the filters being noisy and stuff... Is this true ? even a local fish store told me to get a fluval.. that eheim they stopped carrying because the quality is bad due to the made in china versions

You could buy 2 sunsun 302s for the price of one eheim 2217 (both have similar specs) and have money left over. That's my input if you aren't invoking loyalty to a certain brand of equipment for whatever reason.

I have the 205, 306, and 406 units. Including the intake and discharge hoses they measure 12-1/2", 16", and 20" accordingly. The FX6 model measures 22" tall without the hoses and 17" or 18" wide including the pump. You only need about an inch to remove and reseat the top/motor of those models mentioned but you also need some area inside to set the head down since the hoses stay attached to the unit.

Canister units will do NOTHING to control any water parameter spikes. The only way to control those are thru excellent husbandry, proper selection of compatible species and NOT overstocking tanks. (Although that's not related to your question, I just thought I'd supply those we'll known facts for others.)

Sent from my iPhone that doesn't like me. Or you !!

Rats. The round-looking fitting is deceptive.

It is absolutely silent though, an option might be to run it outside the cabinet and get a decoration to cover it?

Improvisation can lead you out of small issues.
