What do you guys feed your fish? I am not very happy with the food I've been feeding because my fish have had bad color. I used to feed my bolivian Rams Wardley sinking shrimp pellets as there staple food, with peas once a week, blood worms 2-3 times a month, and brine shrimp once a week. I was trying to get them to pair off so I started feeding them Brine shrimp 5 days a week and pellets once a week and peas once a week. Their color tremendously improved! But I don't think that can be healthy for them long term so I would like to know what foods you feed your fish that make them have good color.

I would feed brine shrimp only once a week, try jbl nova Tanganyika flake it's great for bringing out their colour, and jmc high protein pellets mine love it........just a thought

Usually a quality flake food most of the time. Then try to mix in something like bloodworms once or twice a week. Then i usually find a third food to treat them once a month

JBL Spirulina pellets:

Brine shrimps are fine too (live or frozen) of course, cichlids love it, just must be careful of a level of phosphorus in the water they can rise (regular PWC and planted aquarium) if often served.

And my fish love, especially in this (Spring) time, a fresh (15min infused) nettle...

I've used tons of Hikari products in the past and currently, and they have all been superb. I just started using New Life Spectrum as well and the fish love it. Stick with high-quality, skip the big store brands like Tetra.

I've had some past luck getting food samples from LFSs by asking nicely. See what you can do!

IMHO you cant beat NLS Thera A + garlic. It comes in many sizes. My next choice is Omego 1. I also only feed pellets. Flakes are just too messy. Stay away from things like wardly and tetra mostly fillers.

A lot of suggestions to choose from.......you could start at the top and work down..... lol

You'd be surprised at how colorful and lively fish get on a diet exclusively of live foods. All of my fish get a mix of scuds, whiteworms, baby brine, cyclops, blackworms, fairy shrimp and daphnia on a day to day rotation. Their colors are always impressive and my dwarf cichlids spawn regularly.

I've never heard of that one! Where can you find it, is it available in most shops or do you have to order it from somewhere on line?

Flakes don't work for me cause the Rams won't eat them and my harlequins are to fast for anyone else to get them.

I might pick up some hikari Cichlid gold mini pellets.

I have never seen or heard of JBL though, I'll have to look them up.

I'd like to try live foods but they are a BIG NO!!! From my mom! :(

If you don't like live foods, try freeze dried treats like blood worms or mini krill.

Just curious at how you store or house the live foods being as I have never used them.
I would like to use some from time to time though.
I feed the dried bloodworms a couple times a week and the algae wafers listed previously a couple times a week.
I use a quality flake once to twice a week.
And on Sat. they get a slice or two of cucumber.

I use all Hikari products as the staples, plus the freeze dried and Frozen. Been trying seasonally for some live foods I grow in buckets when it is warm outside, not always a sure thing.

The nls Thera Garlic one mentioned above always is enjoyed but will turn the water golden a little more than I prefer with everyday use, so I use maybe 1x per week, also use ground up for fry with Ken's growth formula for fry (available online) and hikari Fry food First Bites.

Recently got a live food culture starter Vinegar Eels and just about to harvest some and hear the fish go absolutely crazy for them, smaller fish as they are really small. But really easy to culture so far. The jar is buzzing with the little guys!

No smell unless you count the vinegar but not smelly don't notice it is there unless I spill it out of the container and that is with the paper towel rubber banded around the top, no smell.

I feed this twice a day 6 days a week in pellet form and have never experienced this.
