    Cuttings Tank - Outside?

what is caught on the filter material is mostly uneaten food and the waste produced by living bacteria (nitrites). I understand that the temperature is not ideal. I have opened the top to let some heat out...We'll see how that goes. I'm working under the assumption that these are tropical...

    Cuttings Tank - Outside?

I have a little 10G tank that I decided to use as a place to get plants established that are getting destroyed by loaches. I didn't want to spend much energy on it, so I have placed it outside. It has 50/50 laterite/pool sand, a AC20 filter, and a bunch of snails. I live in San Diego, so it's...

    Does anybody use foam?

I concur I have nearly the exact same setup and this strategy works well for me too.

How good is filter floss in a HOB?

It seems that any combination will work, but I often organize it like this in my AC HOB(top to bottom): -biomedia (ceramic rings) -sponge -pancake of filter floss covering the bottom sponge -sponge clears the water right up!

    Girlfight at the LFS!!!

What a great story! I have had a political lecture from the owner of one of my LFS's. LFS folks are an interesting breed.

Beautiful Scape vs. Sustainable Scapes ??

This is a great topic. I have felt the same way, working on a 'scape and thinking that it looked good, but not like the mind blowers that you see on the board from time to time. My approach right now is patience. I have a big sword in the middle of my 55G that has been steadily growing and...

    Fish swimming through the house

Didn't know where else to put this. It's not mine, but it's amazing! http://knuttz.net/hosted_pages/Home-Aquarium-20061031

    Snail control

I have yo-yos in my other tank. They can put away the snails! There are Guppies, Endler's, and Cories in this little 6 gallon. We recently stopped using flake because of the small size of these guys. Only small granulated pellets. The cories root around for them and the others grab them out...

    Snail control

I have a small planted tank with too many snails. I don't want to add anything like a loach because the tank is at capacity and the old cucumber-bait trick works OK, but not great. I'm hoping for a change that will make the environment inhospitable to their proliferation. I don't mind them, I...

    What Are These?

I'm thinking they might be larval snails. I saw these a while back right before my pond snail population exploded.

How many pounds of substrate for a 75 gallon?

I have 60lbs of EcoComplete in my 55G. It gave me about 2" of substrate. Just about right.

what does everyone do for work?

I'm a molecular biologist at a biotech company that designs tests to detect the DNA of the target organisms. The tests are mostly used to screen the blood supply for bacteria and viruses like chlamydia and HIV.

    No water changes for years?

I did some Wikipedia surfing and came across this site. http://www.anammox.com/ They describe a process in which rare bacteria anaerobically convert ammonia and nitrite to nitrogen gas. They have patents and don't you forget it. Maybe someday we will have another gadget to attach to the tank...

    Baby Platy

There are more on the way, I can almost guarantee that. :-) If it's really 1cm, then you should be ok. Just make sure to have some hiding places for the incoming babies. You may not be able to catch every one like you did for this one. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if you have already...

I need help with circle type aquarium tank

My calculations say that there would be about 21G in there, not bad: Area of the circle: Pi * (30in/2)^2 = 706.85in^2 Depth of cylinder: let's say 7 inches. Area times height: 706.85in^2 * 7in = 4947.95 cubic inches. 4947.95 cubic inch = 21.42 gallons [US, liquid] According to...

I need help with circle type aquarium tank

I'm thinking "cookie" is what oxygen is describing, like Esra said. If this is possible, I think this would be a cool looking tank!

    75 gallon's Aquascape...UPDATE 4-3-07

I agree with WaterPond about the background and if you are replacing the substrate, go darker. Even if you don't replace the plants with more green, those two changes will definitely improve the appearance of the greenery.

Bumble bee gobys in a community tank

So, I went ahead and did it. They seem to be doing fine. I love those guys, attaching themselves to things with their ventral/anal fins, then zooming off to snag something out of the water column. Quite the little hunters. If I ever get a good camera, you'll see a lot of picture of them and...

Bumble bee gobys in a community tank

Hi All, I am cutting back on my tanks from a 30G and a 5G to one 55G. The 5G has had two bumble bee gobies. I am thinking about selling them, but that can be a hassle and I really like the fish. Might they do ok in my 55G shown here? I think they are large enough to avoid being eaten by...

    Any Really Good Public Aquariums?

It's all about the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, CA. World class stuff. Admittedly, it is a lot of Pacific displays which focus on kelp forests, but there are a lot of great little reef ones too. I also like our local Birch Aquarium at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography here in San Diego.

    ...duck weed?

a duckweek explosion caused such a dimming of the light down at the bottom of my 30G Hex that one of my plants that was nice and full became all stalky as it tried to reach up to the dim light. I'm happy to hear that it deals with nitrates, though. Maybe I'll let my new tank get "contaminated"...

    Canister Filter for a 55gal?

Sorry, got confused. I haven't looked at this brand much. I was just looking at DF&S site to figure it out and mixed them up in the post. Is there a preferred way of getting CO2 into the canister?
