    Just added actinic

So I just added a 96w actinic to my 75gal setup...the existing 220watts is growing plants fine, but i wanted some blues to highlight my fish. eventually I'm gonna have a pair of 55w 50/50 bulbs in there, but I'm getting the bulbs from a friend and figured I'd just do it in stages, since I had...

Use magfloat scrapers with caution when you have Flourite!

Just a word of caution here... Found out the hard way on Monday that sometimes Flourite particles contain enough iron to get attracted to the magnets in a magflot scraper. I momentarily lost the 'link' to the inside scraper, and when i got it re-attached, some pin head sized flourite had stuck...

    Malkore's 75gallon journey - updated 5/3/2006

First off, let me preface my 'log' by saying that I'm one of those people that knows a whole lot about planted tanks, but am also lazy. I don't always practice what I preach. Thus, in my 75gallon log, you'll see various times where the tank looks terrible, and other times where it looks...

Getting tired of the salty side - all my stuff is sold

I'm just not very interested in my salt tank anymore. If anyone near Lincoln, say, within 1 hour, is interested in my setup, send me a PM. I'm not looking to give it away free, but it would not be expensive. You don't have to take my fish either. I'm mainly interested in getting a little of...

    I did it!

I finally got the nerve, after 2+ years, to pull out the driftwood that had the monster java fern of doom attached to it. Its a beast, but its seen better days too. Lots of holy leaves due it it basically choking itself out. The photo shows a normal office sized trashcan, and that's my...

    is my fuge bed crashing?

sorry for the poor photo, but I'm trying to show how the aragonite sand on the left side of the photo has turned charcoal/black, and you can still see the right side is a normal color. this is all carib sea sand..no 'magic mud' or anything like that, and a few pieces of LR rubble. is my bed...

I'm starting to think its a lost cause

I've been trying to stop the algae growth in my reef tank for 2 months now. Large green tufts of hairy algae growing all over my live rock, trying to cover some of my soft corals. I thought my bulbs were spent on spectrum,s o I changed both on 2 separate weekends. No help. I reduced the...

    Condylactus anemone?

Ok, my first attempt at an anemone met with failure. it was a Rose BTA and it died in 3 weeks. I just replaced both my PC bulbs. 40gallon tank, running 14 months now, no deaths this year aside from the anemone and misc. hermit crabs & snails...so pretty stable. My PC bulbs are 1x10,000K and...

Ok, time to buy new bulbs?

I know I'm 'supposed' to replace PC's every 12 months max...but I thought I could squeeze more life outta them...especially since FW plant geeks used to say to replace PC bulbs on planted tanks annually too, but that turned out to be un-necessary. In FW plants, the degradation of spectrum in PC...

    jaw dropping electric bill

8O That's the face I made 10 mins ago when I opened my electric bill for the previous 32days of service. Yes I live in an old house, and yes it's been in the 90's a lot in the past 4 weeks... but I used 2,230 Kw!!! Last year I only used 1,533 Kw in the same time span. The difference is that...

A guide to substrates for the planted tank

The substrate in a planted tank is important, but it does depend on lighting levels and the plants kept. I'll start with the low-light planted tank, since its very straight-forward. Low light substrates Pea Gravel/expoxy gravel - this is your cheap, run-of-the-mill substrate, and for a low...

    A beginner's guide to lighting

Lighting is THE most important aspect of a planted tank...but nearly as important are CO2 and fertilizers. I say lighting is the most important because if you don't have enough light, there's little to no need for ferts or CO2. In fact, without enough light, your plants are simply going to wilt...

A guide to fertilizing your planted aquarium

This post assumes a medium to high light tank. Low light tanks need very little fertilization, which I do bring up at the end of the post. Fertilizing your planted tank goes hand in hand with adequate lighting, and CO2 injection. Think of these as the holy trinity to a successful planted...
