    55g Dirt Planted

Hornwort grows like a weed but it's great for the initial stages of a dirt tank. I think it's one of the main reasons why I dont have an algae bloom in my ten gallon. It's dirted as well but the dirt has seeped through the Eco-complete cap and is all over the top of it. :( slowly siphoning it...

    10G Dirt (NPT) "Mezza Luna"

lol!! I didn't really soak it for too long. I did soak and let it dry like 3 times and let it sit for a week. I think some of the gas is being trapped cuz of the Eco complete I have has cap. It has smaller grain sizes that settles underneath the larger ones. And I think that's compacting the...

    10G Dirt (NPT) "Mezza Luna"

Some updates to this tank. Having some issues with plant growth but it's starting to fill in a bit. I think my substrate has gone anaerobic. I see bubbles coming up and it smells like sulfur. Anyway. Hoping it goes away on its own. I really don't want to tear down this tank...

    55g Dirt Planted

The cambomba looks awesome. That's just what you needed to fill that space. More plant mass will do you some good. I want to use it in my next tank. Going to try a all South American species tank.

    55g Dirt Planted

Dude. You were totally right. After doing some more research I found out that our water is def soft! I haven't tested cuz I dint have a gh/kh test kit but I went in NYC.gov and just googled it. I think this is why some of my plants aren't doing that great. Oh well. Got to add some crushed coral...

    10G Dirt (NPT) "Mezza Luna"

More updates. Java fern " Philippine" was added to my wood. The dwarf hairgrass is not doing all the great. Thinking if pulling it all up. I started a little emersed setup in a glass bowl that inhale outside I'm daylight. It will probably do better with more c02. It struggling in this tank...

    55g Dirt Planted

Did you test your water? I live in Rockaway and my water is def not soft. I would say it's pretty neutral in ph. 7.0 ish or so. I haven't tested GH, tho. Maybe slightly acidic. It's hard to tell by the color on the test kit. Anyways. You could always add some crushed coral to the dirt to make...

    55g Dirt Planted

I ordered thru them and was not happy with the way my plants looked. Most of the leaves were melted on the hygro.completely died. I was able to salvage the crypts, sag and floating plants thankfully. Ideally you want to put healthy plants in a new tank because they need to adjust to your...

    10G Dirt (NPT) "Mezza Luna"

Thank you! I used miracle grow organic choice potting mix. Not much trouble when planting. I did it pretty quick with tweezers. If a little comes up it just settles down in a little bit anyway. It's important to have a good cap in a dirt tank to keep the dirt down.

    10G Dirt (NPT) "Mezza Luna"

I added bacopa and some rotala indica in the right side of the tank. I hoping to keep the rotala bushy and low. Sonar everything is slow to settle in but with time it will take off. Lesson learned so far. Patience!

Thanks guys. here is a quick update. I changed out the intake/outake tubes from the zoo med with acrylic lily pipes. I also added some bacopa but I don't have a recent pic of it. This shot was taken last weekend. Going to do 10-20% water change this weekend. (water a bit cloudy) and take some...

    Plants outcompeting algae?

I don't think this is a new idea. If you read "ecology of the planted aquarium" by Diana Walstad she explains in detail how plants compete with algae in a planted aquarium. If you have lush and healthy plants you can keep algae at bay.
