    Plants & Goldfish...

Common goldfish or goldfish with normal body shapes are the only problem. Goldfish with compact body shapes (aka "egg-shaped") such as orandas and ryukins go great with plants. The ideal tank for such goldfish is a planted tank. I have four egg shaped goldfish in a 42 gallon heavily planted...

    Anyone use Weiss Algae Killer?

You are correct in that they aren't a permanent fix; the user must correct the issues that are actually causing the problem. However, there is absolutely nothing wrong with also using an algaecide to get rid of the majority of the existing algae. One must be careful however to select the right...

Diatom Filter arrived with RESULTS!!! (pics included)

It's too bad you went with majority rule and got a Vortex. You could have eliminated a TON of extra work and fuss by going with a System 1. I threw my PITA Vortex away long ago and never looked back.

Yet another major product discontinuation - Bio-Blend Foods

I have fed MarineLand Bio Blend foods in all my tanks for years now, with great results. Now, without warning, I find all major retailers have pulled Bio Blend from their shelves. I looked up some retailers on the web and found the same thing. I went to http://www.marinelandlabs.com and found...

Tropical Science Biolabs - out of business??

That's only what I found out using the internet. If anyone knows some hard facts to correct my speculations please post!

Tropical Science Biolabs - out of business??

I noticed your thread a while back and finally got around to doing some research. Tropical Science Biolabs, aka TSBiolabs, are the makers of such products as Liquid Gravel Vac and Aqua Flourish, which contains "RNA and DNA" which is somehow supposed to be beneficial. If you go to the site...

    Anyone own a Zebra Plec?

IMHO they are overrated. They are hiders. You will NEVER see them. I've seen planted tanks with over a dozen of them in there and you had to work REALLY hard to just to find ONE. There are dozens of other brightly colored fancy plecos available. Take a look at all the different peckolitas that...

I want a blood red parrot (Is that wrong?)

If buying a parrot ciclid is wrong, then so are fancy goldfish. By that matter, so are dwarf dogs (like basset hounds and corgis), giant dogs (like great danes), and "extreme" faced dogs (pugs, bulldogs) and cats (persians). All of these are genetic deformities that will cause the animals...

Warning - Contaminated Eco Complete in the market

I believe the pH buffer is a phosphate based buffer, hence the high phosphates. Some people over at plantedtank have reported that Carib-Sea said they will replace it. So far however, no one has gotten their replacement bags.

    shipping from aquariumplants

I was going to say there are some big problems with Eco Complete right now so that may be why there was a delay. http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumapc/showthread.php?t=6572 http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/s...ead.php?t=17035 http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/s...ead.php?t=15791...

No goldfish in a tropical tank, right? Why?

Complete total misconception. Goldfish do great at tropical temperatures, preferably in the mid 70's. I have been keeping goldfish at tropical temperatures for a couple years now. They do GREAT. In fact, if you keep the fancier "egg shaped" varities (orandas, black moor, etc.), they do much...

    Blue Lobster?

Crayfish will eat anything they can catch. I have never kept one, but I understand that they are best with smaller, skittish tropical fish (like guppies and tetras). Larger more aggressive fish (like cichlids) will tear the crayfish apart.

Butterfly Loach (aka Hill Stream Loach)

I'm not sure where you get this information. I have kept hillstream loaches in levels greater than this and they do just fine.

Butterfly Loach (aka Hill Stream Loach)

They need very high levels of dissolved oxygen in the water. They live in very fast rapids with very high oxygen. It's been my experience that you must run an airstone when keeping balitorids such as hillstream loaches, or they will die very quickly.

anyone know how to report a store to the humane society?

I gave up reporting incidents long ago. There's lots of different organizations and lots of online forms, but it seems that it never makes any difference. They are either too busy, understaffed, or have more important matters to attend to. That's been my personal experience anyways. :?

    zebra plecos

The export ban is 100% true, not a rumor. Went into effect this month. Here's an exceprt from an article in the January 2005 issue of Tropical Fish Hobbyist Personally, while I do think zebra plecos are pretty, they are overrated. They are cave dwellers, so you will not see them that much in...

How many people only feed once a day?

Once a day? Try every other day... Mammals (like humans) are warm blooded and must keep their body temperature at a constant level, and therefore must eat frequently to satisfy the energy their bodies need to do this. Since fish are cold blooded, they don't need to expel energy on body...

    Bio-Spira

Totally not true. With Bio Spira, you add a full fish load + Bio Spira to a new tank and you are already 100% cycled. It's been proven time and time and time again. It's statements like this that perpetuate disbelief in the product, which is why you can't buy it from places like Petco and Petsmart.

    My Eheim is BS...any recommendations?

The best way to increase your dissolved oxygen is via airstones and airpumps. Again, the science behind bio wheels is accurate, it's just that the bio wheels in HOB filters spin way too fast and are so little that their impact on the tank is minimal when compared to using a non bio wheel filter...

    My Eheim is BS...any recommendations?

I hate to open a can of worms... BUT.... IMO bio wheels are useless gimmicks. They are an attempt to replicate a system that sewage treatment plants use, except that treatment plants use giant motor driven wheels. So while the concept behind the bio wheel isn't a gimmick, the small wheels used...

    My Eheim is BS...any recommendations?

Make sure the impeller assembly is put together correctly. There should be two bushings - one on each end of the impeller shaft. (They're the little black rubber things.) When one or both bushings is missing, problems like yours can happen.

    BristleNose Plecostomous

Most all species in the Ancistrus genus (aka Bristlenosed Plecos) don't get bigger than 6 inches. Most common plecos (mainly Hypostomus) don't get bigger than 18-24 inches max. Your LFS guy has his information ass backwards. Common Ancistrus Starlight Ancistrus Orange Temmincki Ancistrus Albino...

    Black Moor ??

A black moor is definitely a goldfish. I am not sure what makes a black moor a black moor, as opposed to a black telescope eyed goldfish (which to me is the same thing) - perhaps breeding lineage? Anyway, my experience with them is that they are extremely peaceful and tame... I've yet to see an...

    goldfish and dwarf frog?

I keep 6 ADF's in with 5 rather large egg shaped fancy goldfish. Been set up for around a year. The goldfish show no interest in trying to eat the frogs. And the frogs show no fear of swimming right next to the goldfish. I don't have any experience in keeping them with "common" goldfish; my...
