    translate?

Does anyone have or know where I can find a way to translate the latin names into the names that are actually on the tanks at the fish store? I'm about to change my reef into a cichlid tank and am trying to get a list of compatible fish, but all of the websites give only the latin names for the...

    Worst crash ever!!! Kinda long.

Came home to a cloudy tank and most of our fish dead. Apparently, at least I think this is what happened, one of the damsels got into the intake on a powerhead and got shredded. Then the whole tank started to die from ammonia. We lost: yellow tang, naso tang, 3 damsels, mandarin (2yrs old)...

    breeding time for mosquito fish

title says it all. We bought two mosquito fish for a small tub pond, but the water was getting too hot, so we moved them to the big pond. That was maybe 3 weeks ago, now we have several babies about 1/4 inch long. Do you think one of them was already prego or maybe we have a male and a female?

    yellow ball of string animal?

We noticed that we had several yellow legs sticking out from a shroom. I moved the shroom aside and discovered a string animal. It looks like 20 or 30 pieces of string balled together. It is yellow with black stripes going across the strings. It has a mass at the center that i'm assuming is...

    And then there were three.

Two months ago our rbta divided into two. Now the original has divided in two again and the first division is about 4 inches across and will probably be dividing soon too. The top one is the first divided baby, the bottom right is the original and the one on the bottom left(small) is the...

red colored balls of something(now with pics)

Our 20g has several new things including red flatworms but this thread is about something stranger. Several of the rocks are being colonized by some red ball shaped things. Most are round but some are flatter, they have a white line across the tops from one end to the other. Some of them...

    diy pond filter

We are thinking about building this filter. Our 5 gallon busted out the side from pressure. Here's the question. This person specifies using biodegradable filter media, why does it need to be biodegradable and would fiberglass air conditioner filters do just as well? www.mvwgs.org/filter.htm

snails without shells? now with pics

We have recently found that our 20g is full of these. They look and clean just like snail only they don't seem to have shells. They do have raised spots on their backs like they want to have a shell or may be developing a shell. Some are very small but some are almost as big as the turbo...

Well I did it. Finally added the new coral rubble. Now the 90g tank has appx 180 pounds and the 20g has about 40 pounds. They are chock full. Some of it is having the hob filters completely full of small chunks of rubble but the tanks are very full too. Will post pics as soon as everything...

quick question about curing live rock

As I've said before, I brought 85 to 90 pounds of coral rubble back from Hawaii. It's been curing for nearly a month. The ammonia is at zero, and the nitrite is at .25 to .50. I want to get it into the tanks this weekend if possible. Here's the question. With these water results, does this...

Why don't more people use live rock to cycle?

I see all the time where new aquarists cycle their tanks with shrimp, then want to add huge quantities of live rock. Why don't more of us just use the live rock to cycle to begin with? It is a great cycle starter and we wouldn't have to deal with the probability of ammonia spikes after we've...

another question about curing live rock.

We brought appx 85-90 pounds of coral skeleton back from Maui on the 17th of April. It has been curing in a 20 gallon tub since then. I have 2 powerhead running in it. I started out with new saltwater and have been changing 5 gallons every other day. I am replacing it with the water from my...
