    Lone German Blue Ram

I have a male GBR in a 10 gallon tank. It's well planted and well established. His only companions are a few dozen cherry red shrimp who he seems to ignore. He feeds well and always comes to the glass when I talk to him (no, I'm not a nutter). I am an experienced fish keeper and keep the tank...

    Keeping an empty tank cycled

I have a quarantine tank which is rarely empty as I quarantine for a long time and have had a rolling programme to stock my main tank. Now that the main tank is fully stocked I shall have the QT without fish for a few months and would like to keep it running and keep the filters healthy ready...

    BN on glass

Had to share this pic of my BN on the front glass after main lights out and blue lights on. A bit fuzzy due to the low light, but I found it fascinating, hope you all do too! Sent from my iPad using Aquarium Advice

    Zebra Plec L046

I'm researching the bio type for a zebra Plec. Because of its price I need to get it right. I've read up on them and they prefer rocks and caves but still well planted for high oxygen levels and fairly strong water currents. My tank is a typical Amozonia - bogwood, loads of plant, tetras and...

    Pesky shrimp

Had to share this pic My BN looking fed up as the RCS feed around him. Sent from my iPad in West Yorkshire, U.K.

    Blue LED lighting

I've just fitted a blue LED lighting strip which is on for an hour before the main lights and 2 hours after main lights out. The fish seem to like it, they come out more in the blue evening light and we like the effect. My question is ..... Do blue lights have any adverse affect on the growth...

    Harlequin problem.

One of my Harlequins has two white growths, one on the top of the body, near to the tail, where it's at its narrowest. The other is on the underside at the same place. Its boy woolly looking and doesn't extend beyond the body very far. It looks like it could have been bitten across this narrow...

    A friends new tank

A friend of mine has bought a new 60l hex tank. It's her first time fish keeping and I'm having awful trouble convincing her about cycling her tank. What she needS to know is what to stock. I'm not very good at stocking small tanks but I thought as shoal of tetras and maybe some dwarf Corys...

    Serpae tetras with white lips

My Serpae tetras have the early stages of what looks like white lips. There is no fuzz, just discolouration. Does anyone know what this is and what medication would be effective. I can't get a picture. Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    Infrared Thermometer

Having got fed up with different types of aquarium thermometer, and trying to use one to match water temperatures on water changes, I bought myself an infrared thermometer. It's brilliant. Instant temperature readings in a all areas of the tank letting me see the hot spots and cooler areas. Just...

    Pepper Cory babies

This may not be big news, but my Pepper Cory's have bred in my community tank. I had one baby a few months ago and thought it a fluke but now I have two more, different sizes so probably from different batches. The tank is heavily planted which probably gave enough cover for them. Given that I...

    Aquarium App

I have been using the free Aqua Planner Pro App on my I phone for over a year. It is a fantastic way to record absolutely everything about your tank. It even shows your test results on a graph so you see trends. I can't rate it highly enough. Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    My planted 4 foot.

My planted tank with Tetras, Corydoras and Red Cherry Shrimp. Plants are not rare or specialist but I like the 'Jungle' effect. Takes a lot of thinning to keep swimming channels open. Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    Bucket water changes

I have a 200l tank and use a 10l bucket for WCs. I assumed as one bucket is 5% of the tank water volume then 10 buckets would be 50%. Not so. The first bucket changes 5% but subsequent buckets remove some of the new water added. It turns out that 10 buckets only change 40% of the original tank...

    Ick parasites

A general question about the Ick parasite. At 78f, a fairly typical temp, how long can an Ick parasite live without finding a host. If a tank has been Ick free (no white spots on fish) for about 2 weeks can I be confident that the tank has become Ick free? Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    Baby Corydoras

Had such a surprise tonight to spot a baby peppered Corydoras in my tank. It's very heavily planted and it's got to half an inch without being spotted before. This may not be rare but it was a complete thrill for me. Had to share! Sent from my iPhone using Aquarium Advice

    Sick blood fin tetras

I have a 60g with a variety of tetras shoals. All appear healthy and water specs are spot on. However, one of my blood fins recently started swimming head up and tail down and struggled to reach the surface. It did feed but life was a trial and eventually it became almost unable to swim. It has...

TDS meter use in a fresh water tropical aquarium

I have acquired a TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) meter as a gift. I have had great problems finding decent info on its use. My Ammo is 0, Nitrite is 0, Nitrate is 5, Kh is 6, Gh is 6 , Ph 6.9 and Temp is 27.5. I am satisfied with these results. My meter info says TDS should be 70-110 but I had a...

    TDS meters

I regularly test Kh and Gh. I aim for a reading of 6 degrees of each. Would there be any advantage in using a TDS meter, would that not just tell me the total hardness and not the balance of Kh and Gh (eg. Kh could be lower and Gh higher and still get the same result as Kh and Gh being equal).

    Source water used for WCs

It seems to me that a lot of newbies out there don't know what the specs of there source water is. It is essential to know what you are working with before adding it to your tank. Take a sample, leave it 24 hours and test for Ph, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, Kh and Gh as a starting point. Only...

    Tubifex worms?

When I gravel clean my tank (the substrate is some kind of 'live' ECO gravel populated with a fair few MTS) I pull up small pea size balls of what look like tubifex worms. I inherited the substrate and it may have been in a tank fed tubifex worms on the past. I have not. I dropped one little...

    LFS water!

I have just purchased 5 black neons, 5 glowlights & 2 panda Cory's from my favourite LFS. Fish looking good but I thought it a good idea to check the LFS water. Temp & Ph ok. Ammonia <0.25, Nitrite 0 but Nitrate was off my test kit chart ..... >180. Wow! Never seen THAT colour before! Just...

    Do I need flourish

I have a 270l heavily planted tank with fish and RCS. I have 2 x 42" t8 tubes ( one for plant spectrum and one for fish colours). My specs are temp 27C, Ph 7.2, ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 5, Kh 6, Gh 6. I use standard dose of excel every morning. I use co2 injection for 10 hrs to attain 15ppm...

    White film on Clown Loach

My friend has lost her 2 clown loach. They had what looked like a white film over the whole body. It did not look like Ick but the fish had been scraping against the bog wood which now looks to have a white film in places. This came on quite quickly and the fish died within 24 hrs from observing...

    UV Sterilisers

I decided to fit a UV steriliser to my 270l tank as a health precaution. I have fish, shrimp & Cory's and don't ever want to use chemicals or meds. After 1 week I can't believe how clear the water is and I thought it clear before. I am well pleased. Just wanted to tell someone as my friends are...
