    Hemichromis paynei

I just purchased a male and two female jewels today to go in my 30 gallon that used to house my green sunfish. I'm wondering about what size they start breeding. They are currently about 1.5" each. The male is quite the territorial little thing, I like his spark.

    Snail shells

I have several dozen trumpet and ramshorn snails in my 30 gallon tank. When I started this tank they were a mixture of beautiful golden browns. Now they are white, like calcium white. I have very hard water, more so than what my test kit could measure. I also have driftwood in the tank. No algae...

    A centerpiece fish?

I finally redid my 30 gallon driftwood tank. I'd been letting it age not-so-gracefully as I haven't had time for it. I now have stocked... 3 blackskirt tetras 4 buenos aires tetras 2 female bettas 1 kuhli loach 1 zebra danio 2 checkered barbs I don't plan to get more barbs or danios as they...

    He's king of the aquarium

I had three pumpkinseeds in with my green sunfish for 2 months. All were the same size, 4". Plenty of hiding spaces. The green was obviously getting more of the food as he's now 5"+. Two pumpkinseeds died though. I think he just looks at them and they die! When I gave him feeder guppies once...

    Hungry tetras

I have a 25 gallon stocked with 2 buenos aires tetras, 3 black tetras, 4 zebra danios, and a handful of young white clouds. I went away for 5 days. Now I've got half the white clouds and some fat tetras. Some fishies had a snack while I was away. And here I though the tetras would eat my plants.

    which is more toxic?

Ammonia or Nitrites? My 55 gallon is cycling with some of my pond fish and not a single one died during the ammonia phase. Now the nitrites have spiked and half the golds are dead. Over the winter all 8 golds lived in a 20 gallon tub and all survived. The temp was 40F and they only got a half...

    when will it sink

All who are experienced with driftwood, how long did you hae to soak it before it sank on its own? I have two very large pieces going on 48 hours.

    price limit?

Do you have price limits on certain fish? I certainly do. I went to 5 pet stores today and only got some baby white clouds. I won't pay over $1 for tetras (unless exceptionally hard to find), barbs, livebearers, danios or other minnows, hatchets and a few more typical tropicals. I don't mind...

    White clouds

Total top dwellers or just afraid? I lost a few trops in my move and had two buenos aires tetras and three black skirts in my 25g show tank. So I bought 2 dozen white cloud baby feeders today. I figure maybe three will survive to adulthood. I hate buying baby fish but I refuse paying $3 for a...

    I love free

I was driving past a house today while the owner was hauling a 55 gallon aquarium out to the curb. So I stopped and asked him if it was anybody's for the taking. And now its sitting in our driveway filled with water and no leaks whatsoever. Next problem: what to stock? Maybe I'll move goldfish...

    great algae eater

My mom has had algae problems in her guppy tanks for years. Its very dark algae and most snails and fish we've tried either wouldn't touch it, or died soon after. A week ago she got a gold algae eater, Gyrinocheilos aymorieri I believe, and the algae is gone. It looks like she bought a new tank...

    Buenos Aires tetra

Do these tetras need a school? I'm trying to figure out stocking for my empty tanks right now. I went to the store and got 2 dozen trumpet snails (yea!) and the last buenos aires tetra in a tank with loaches and black skirts. I know he'll get 4 inches about. I can find some more for a tank, but...

    N brichardi

How many brichardi for a 25 gallon show? Is 4 ok? I only have a juvie rainbow shark in it now.

    Got my rainbow shark

I finally got not 1 but 2 rainbow sharks. They've been on my want list for a while. They are 1.5 inches a piece, both boys, and both together in a 10 gallon qt. After quarentine, one will go to a 20 gallon with my female bettas and one will go to the setup I am doing for brichardi cichlids. They...

    Argulus, fish lice

One of my goldfish in quarentine had a fish lice on its tail. I took it off with a tweezers and put it in a jar of water. I just wonder how long it will live without a host. Its kinda amusing to watch so I've still not killed it. Any insight?

    striped raphael cat

How do you tell the genders apart? I don't have one myself, somebody asked me. I said I'd try and find out. They haven't got back to me yet about whhere the fish is housed but I have a feeling they have it with goldfish and I'm going to have to explain to them that this spiney devil of a fish...

    I've had enough

I've always considered platies to be semi-aggressive. But in the female betta sorority tank my twinbar had been doing well. Now he's nipping and flaring at the girls and really going after them. My milleri sword female is bullying the goldfish she lives with as well. I've never had an aggressive...

    calico chinese hi-fin shark

Boy my new fish sure is an ugly concept Just kidding :), my new fish is a koi/comet hybrid with a torn dorsal fin. Sharky was the fish name I thought of when I saw the ripped dorsal that made him look like a hi-fin shark. Its a clean tear, should heal fine. I mixed a comet and hi fin on...

    Future prospects

We've probably done threads like this, but are there any fish you've got on your waiting list of "fish I'd just love to own in the future"? I'd love: Killifish (something with green/grey natural looking coloration) Midas Cichlid Cherry barbs or checkered barbs Brown discus Rainbow shark Hi-fin...

    success

The pumpkinseed is eating cichlid pellets now. No more trying to keep feeder fish alive. He's enjoying hiding in his tank full of plants and hiding spots. He's kinda breathing heavy though, I don't know if its normal or not for him. I found out the limnologist in the school did a study on...

this just has to be the only store around with uncommon fish

Why? A little background. I've lived in the "suburbs" all my life. Within our area we have over a dozen pet stores, but they all are immaculate. We have outlawed the sale of puppies and kittens in stores in our since I was 5. The last time I remember seeing puppies in a store was when I was...

    eep!

I pulled out a stingray filter today because it stopped running, I open it up and into my hand falls one of my kuhlis. Guess he got hungry and wanted to clean the inside of the filter. I almost jumped and threw it across the room! Oh, I got the filter running :)

    How does this happen?

I'm just finishing up a round of maracyn plus, melafix, and salt treatment in a tank with cloudy eye, columnaris, and ich. Fish are doing fine, but this morning I noticed nematodes on the tank glass. They can survive all the treatments I've got in the tank?!? I've never had them before and I...

    pumpkinseed

I fished a pumpkinseed out of the local store's mixed feeder tank. Since he'll stay small I figure he'd be ok with my larger goldfish. I was wondering about their color. I know a few people on here have raised pumpkinseeds. He/she's only about 3 inches and mostly white with the orange spot...

what makes a cichlid a cichlid?

I bought a little pumpkinseed today from the feeder tank at a local store, since he didn't look like he wanted to be a side dish and he'd do fine with my larger common goldfish. Anyway, I know he's a sunfish, but to me he looks like every other cichlid. What exactly qualifies as a cichlid?
