Is my child dangerous to his new pet fish?

I am a special education teacher and work with many students that are on the spectrum. I have been considering starting an after school fish-keeping program. Not knowing your child, I have a feeling that once he knows the rules about how to interact/enjoy the fish, he will stick to them. Just...

Could this be dangerous?? Please help!

using water from the other tank is not going to help the new tank cycle. using filter media from the other tank will. i would just vacuum it up like was suggested already, and also monitor levels of ammonia. be prepared to do several weekly water changes for a while.

Could this be dangerous?? Please help!

You just set it up on Sunday? Did you cycle the tank? I can't really see what's going on in the photo, but is it a clear slime? Or is it brownish? Looks brownish in the photo to me. Are you testing the water, at least the ammonia levels? Fish behaving normally?

Are you using carbon in your filter? If so, remove it while dosing meds. Also, when buying fish from big box stores, take your time and observe the fish in the tank for any signs of disease: visible ich, damaged fins, dead fish present, flashing etc. Also be aware that the water in their...

    Algae

I usually let it grow on the back wall. I like the look of it, too..and think it can be beneficial and aesthetically pleasing as long as it is kept under control and assuming it is not the result of any issues with water chemistry.

What to do about weekly WC?

Assuming this is an established tank and you are normally diligent about doing your weekly changes, one week should not hurt. Perhaps just top off any water lost to evaporation and then get back on your normal schedule next week? Otherwise, is there anybody around that could give you a hand...

Any fish that eats algae for small tank

Best to treat the cause of the algae problem first. How long do you leave your lights on? Is the tank getting lots of sun light? What are the nitrate levels? In a tank that size, I would not recommend a pleco, although otos could work. Another great algae eating fish is the platy. I am...

New 10 Gallon Tank Help!! Please!!

Don't use soapy water or any type of detergent. Also, think about how you would like to cycle the tank for the next try at it. Think it all through and do not make impulse purchases.

    Unhealthy Pleco

This is all very sound advice...I would also suggest keeping the quarantine tank dark as it will be less stressful for your fish. If it jumped out of your tank, the fall could have caused some internal injuries as well as damaging his dorsal fin. You will want to make sure water conditions are...

    Cloudy Water

How are you testing the water? Your numbers all sound fine, so I wouldn't be overly concerned. It should continue to clear up. What sort of fish is the missing fish? Perhaps it died and caused the mini spike? Good luck

What fish do you think should NOT be in the fish keeping hobby?

During my brief stint working at a big chain pet store, I learned that many of the fish shipments were not ordered by the store managers at all, but simply included in their weekly shipments unasked for. Of course, small stores do not have this problem and should order stock with more thought...

Do harlequin rasbora get "pregnant" looking or is it bloat?

artificial or live, look into the types that they will prefer.

Do harlequin rasbora get "pregnant" looking or is it bloat?

Those fish look quite healthy to me...I would research plants to add that will be conducive to them spawning. They will most likely eat any deposited eggs shortly after spawning. What concerns me is that she may not be spawning because she does not have suitable vegetation. It's worth...

Do harlequin rasbora get "pregnant" looking or is it bloat?

She is just full of eggs. They like to lay their eggs on the underside of broad leafed plants where the leaves hang over. The ones I see in that tank mostly go straight up and down. You could consider adding an ideal plant for spawning. Also, I'm not saying that she is egg bound, but that...

    Safe Driftwood?

Not sure what type of wood that is, but if it is a hard wood then it should be just fine. It looks really cool. I would give that "live" area where you broke it off the sniff test. If it smells at all like pine or cedar, then you probably dont want to use it. Assuming it is safe wood to...

    Sick goldfish?

Exactly how high are the nitrates? Before you do a huge water change, consider that a sudden drastic change in levels could also be a shock to your fish. It may be better to do several smaller water changes.

Having trouble feeding My red tail shark

one thing you can do is try feeding at night. another thing you can try is using a length of thin maybe 1 inch pvc pipe. extend it into the water to the depth where the red tailed shark is hanging out...then drop the food into it at the top. it will sink through the length of the pipe and...

    danios and schooling

Unless you have LOT of low level hiding spots, carpeting plants decor etc. all the fry will likely be snacked on. You can often spot the developing fry/eggs right below the substrate on the edges of the tank walls...the larger the substrate, the more eggs that will develop into fry. If you get...

    danios and schooling

Danios are a fun fish to watch and very active. A lot of people will say that a 20 gallon long is a good minimum sized tank as it gives them room to do their thing (swim all over the place)...but a lot of others will say your tank is fine. I tend to fall more with the crowd that says larger...

    detritus worms

So they're in an empty tank? I can't see them in the photo. Just do a large water change sucking up all the leftover food and worms you see. Once the food is gone, the remaining will disappear/die off quickly. Are you planning to quarantine any new fish soon?

    Help me!

Welcome to the forum. Transporting and adding fish to a tank are very stressful to the fish...and losses can happen. how long has the tank been running? what size is the tank and what is the stocking? how are you testing the water? do you know the readings for ammonia/nitrites/nitrates?
