i recently got a 30g tall freshwater tank(24x24x12). i want to put in African cichlids and have been looking at the Frontosa. will they even be happy in the tank, if so what other cichlids are compatible with them.

Frontosa get huge and are not suitable for a 30 gallon.

Honestly, the footprint of your tank is not suitable for any African cichlids other than Tanganyikan shelldwellers. Lamprologus brevis, multifasciatus, ocellatus, and similar species would do well in your setup. They need a sand substrate and lots of shells, and are quite fascinating to watch in a species tank. I kept L. ocellatus "gold" for a while and really enjoyed them.
