Alrighty, so I'm thinking about keeping one or two medium/large Central/South American cichlids in my spare 55g aquarium. I want to do a single-species setup, and I was wondering what suggestions you all would have? Any input would be super-fantastic!

Or you could do a small group of a single species of cryptoheros or thorichthys, avoiding the super common species. Basically the two genera are the convict-like cichlids (although the convict-like cichlids can be found in a few different genera, mainly amatitlania, which his home to the black convict, amatitlania nigrofasciata) and the firemouth cichlids (Thorichthys meeki is the common firemouth). you could do a small breeding group of basically any species within those two genera. Species include, but not limited to:

THORICHTHYS:
Aureum
Pasionis
maculipinnis (aka ellioti)
sp. Blue Mixteco
sp. Gold Mixteco

CRYPTOHEROS:
Nanoluteus
Panamense (These are BEAUTIFUL but feisty)
Sajica
Spilurum
Cutteri (Blue eyed cichlid, a good fish for a beginner-novice keeper IMO)
Chetamulensis
Spilurus
Myrnae
