I have a aqueon 5 gallon bowfront tank. the filter that comes with it has no cover over the area that have the filter sponge so it is exposed to directly to the light in the hood. The sponge has started to grow green algea on it. Is this bad? It is a planted tank so I don't want to turn off the light. The water parameters are fine so far, ph= 7.6, ammonia = 0, nitrite= 0, nitrate= 10. The only fish is a betta. Plants include java fern, 2 anubias nano, and a couple of plants that have sprouted from a betta bulb pack ( crypts of so kind?).
