I use the API (Aquariuam Pharmacueticals Institute) master test kit for freshwater. I am not sure if you can find them in Australia, but test kits similar to the API would be preferred over the paper test strips. HTH!

The API test kits are sold in Oz.
If you don't already have test kits, I also recommend buying the freshwater master test kit like Dotti said. Last time I saw it, it was around the $50.00 mark. You can buy it at almost any local fish shop.

Online at websites like Bigalsonline.com you can get the test kit for 15 Dollars. So i would seriously look into buying it online to save yourself the huge markup of a retail store.
