I am looking into getting an pair of angelfish or a single fish. At the moment I have marineland 29 gallon tank (is it big enough?). I have a penguin 150 power-head filter (wrong filter?). Also I would like to know any plants, tank mates and tips that would be helpful to a hopefully successful angelfish tank, also my pH is 8 and I have very hard water any suggestions besides ro (reverse osmosis).

Your 29 is on the small side for a pair of full grown adults. A single angelfish can work but,IMO, a 29 is still too small. I have 2 29 gallons and my mom originally wanted angels but I talked her outta it.

Assuming you get a single angel, cardinal tetras are good tank mates. any tall plants are good, they help give a sense of security. I have some amazon swords, corkscrew vals and jungle vals. My fish enjoy them.

Angels never did well when I had a 29 gallon set up. When I had two one picked on the other incessantly so I rehomed one. Upgraded to my old 55 when we moved and my angel seems much better. More relaxed and less stressed if that makes sense? He glides gently around and before he seemed geared up and irritable.

agreed with both comments. the only time i use a 30 is when i put a breeding pair in it . but as far as a community tank it wont work

Well lets say I do get a larger tank then what about the other things. For instance is my pH correct and my water hardness? Also what plants do you use?
I kept some tetras a while back and decided to get some fish more appropriate for my water conditions.

I have hard water with a ph of about 7.8. Most will adjust to your tank parameters, especially if they are captive bred, stability is key.

I hae a 55 gal aquaium most likely overstocked but I have to adult pairs of angelfish, bown goastknife,2 giant dinoes,2 pictus catfishand, four skirted tetras and they all seem fine. i have had this tank for a couple of years so i guess all is well
