Any ideas?

So after my little guy dumped all the food into the tank and in the process of cleaning it, I noticed these blackish piles of something on the bottom. Any ideas of what it might be?

Ok...back to cleaning the food out of the tank. ???

Not food sinking pellets that have expanded in the water?

Nope. There were no sinking pellets. And these don't look like expanded sinking pellets. I know what those look like.

Hmm, what size are they? I'm assuming the orange is the fish flakes on white sand?

There are, or I should say were, a bunch of different sizes, pretty much the same colour, around the aquarium. And yes, the orange flakes are food, courtesy of my 3 year old.
