i am planning to set up a lake tanganyika tank in my 60 gal. i was wondering if any one has used pumice stones in their tank set ups. will it work fine? and where can you get them. ive tried looking online and cant find any place that sells it or im not trying hard enough i guess :\ i want to work with pumice stone specifically because it is light weight and wont hurt the fish when they move the stones around

But pumice stone is quite abrasive, so fish brushing against them could get scrapes, which could get infected.

Plus, as I recall, many smaller pumice stones float...making them kind of useless in an aquarium.
But, its been about 12 years since I would have had anything resembling earth science, so I could be wrong that they float.

You are so right about about its abrasive quality!!.......Makes a wonderful cleaning tool for porceline, as in sinks, toilets, etc. you know that hard water, scaley build-up that they push all those chemicals to use to remove?? Put on your gas mask, protective gloves, and goggles?? All you need is a pumice stone and some elbow grease ta-dah!! Gone!!
Sorry about "helpfull cleaning hints" and you are correct about the floating quality of this stone, a 2 1/2 X 5" piece floats nicely.
Perhaps you can buy it in a more dense version but I can't suggest where. Good luck  :D

What purpose would it serve in the tank?

Isn't that the stuff you use to soften calluses on your feet? I would NOT put that in with delicate fish. (And all fish are delicate compared to working feet)

dang besides the abrasive quality would have been good to use not hurtting the fish if the rocks were to tumble down being light. ive heard thought just boiling the pumice stone in hot water makes the pumice stones not float o_O

well, pumice may not float in boiling water due to the fact the water is boiling. I've never heard of that as being a 'fix' to make em sink though.

Even still, I feel they'd be too abrasive for your fish to be around.

yeah it can be done eh i guess so though too abrasive maybe good for saltwater save a lot of money
