For now, lets go back to basics which is what Purrbox was doing. On the basis of this info, I agree it sounds like your tank is not fully cycled. If you don't know what that means, start reading here

Nitrogen Cycle

Unless Ammonia = 0, NitrITE = 0 and NitrATE is something other than 0 (usually 20ppm or higher) your tank is not cycled. The good news is that there is a clear path to fix this problem. The bad newsisthat it will involve a bit of effort in the short term (up to 6 weeks).

Do yourself a big favour and buy liquid test kits. They are simple to use and its really important at all times to know the parameters of your tank.

Until then, do a partial water change of 50% straight away. If your tank isn't cycled, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but daily water changes are in your immediate future until it is cycled.

Use no other additives except a good dechloronator, especially if a person from an LFS shop tells you to. Check here first.
