Sand is an extremely common sediment the world over, the only difference being that in nature there's nutrients available in the sand. That's the big difference: whether you fertilize it or not.
 
Umm, I would be careful with that pleco, they tend to munch/'run over' plants and are overall not to plant friendly. Just something to watch out for. All of the plants already listed are great for ten gallons. Good luck!
