Betta death

I had recently moved my betta into a 1/2 gallon tank to separate it from my mollies and it was doing good but when I did began showing different behavior for instance he he used to shoot from from one end of my 13 gal to another and when I put him in the smaller tank he began to act Like the average store bought Molly simply breathing at the top and casually swimming to and fro but when I came home he was dead at the bottom of my tank

Did you notice any yellowy stuff on him? It sounds kinda like velvet,( i just got over velvet in my guppies) but I'm not sure.
The tank might have been too small.

How often were u changing water in the 1/2g ? They build up ammonia fast in little tanks.

Ii had placed him in with some water from the tank a day before
