Do I need to buy the Rena Ceramic rings or is there a cheaper DIY method?

You can buy any brand of Ceramic rings. I use Fluval in our canisters because they are cheap.

Nylon/plastic pot scrubbers work well too...

Lava rocks work well too as they are porous, giving lots of surface area for bacteria growth. You can pick those up at Home Depot.

I use the "seachem matrix" porous rocks. They're about the cheapest commercial product I've found and they seem to work great.
