changing to sand...

So I have a tank already, been up for 2 years. I want to switch to sand. I have live plants as well. How do I switch over to the sand without totaly starting over and having to recycle

You should be fine just swapping out the gravel but if you want to be very sure keep some of the old gravel as a thin bottum layer under the sand. You will lose some bactaeria colonies but with a tank that old you should be ok.
