Cichlid help?

ok, so i want to set up a 30 gallon cichlid tank, it's cycling right now and has sand in it. I want to know what kind of cichlid i should get, african or south american cichlid? and if so what different types? and how should i set up the rock formation. I've kept tropicals and other semi-aggresives before but i know cichlids are completely different. Any helps is much appreciated!!

I would get south american cichlids. In this case apistos would be fine.

I souls just do a pair of apistos, or a heavily planted tank with 4 GBR .

I would go a pair of gbr's or apistos. The cockatoo apisto is beautiful. Gbr's can be a little finicky so if you want one that's a little hardier the Bolivian rams are nice too.
