Started a 12gal DX nano about 1 month ago and it was looking fine. The reason i started it was for a hospital tank, done with that purpose now. So I took some rock, sand and water from my display and added it to my 12gal. Levels in my display are perfect. Transfer everything and now i have a Nitrate spike through the roof. What could have caused this and how should i go about correcting it?

The only thing in this tank right now is a hermit crab. What else can i add that would be ok in a 12gal nano..

Lighting is 4watts per gallon and water flow is a 102gph, i know i need more flow. But how can i do that in a nano?

Did you get ammo/nitrite spikes as well or just nitrate? If the former, something probably died (microfauna, sponges inside the rock?) when you transfered the rock and sand, or soon after. If the latter, I'm not sure, but it may have to do with the loss of the denitrification from the sump/sand bed in the original tank.

For stocking, add a few snails. 1 or 2 shrimp would be ok, corals... For fish, small gobies (true or dart), clowns (ocellaris or percula), damsels...

You can use an empty HOB for additional flow and as a mini-fuge.

If you have a JBJ which I'm assuming you do, you can replace the stock pump with either a mini-jet 606 or a maxi-jet 400. They bothe run cooler and increase flow so it's a good modification.

There is also a surface skimmer modification that you can make real easy and cheap if you have a Dremmel Tool and an old 8mm video cassette case. There are actually a lot of different ideas for the Nanocube ... some a bit more complex than others. www.nano-reef.com has some good tips ... BUT it's not as good as AA.COM :D :D !!!
