I have a 10 gallon aquarium with two dwarf gourami (separated at the moment, to let one of them grow a little further. Once I have the budget, I'm going to get a separate tank, to allow for my gourami to have better space. I'm not allowed any more gallons in my dorm however). I currently have black gravel substrate but I want to start planting.
Would the gourami be okay with the sand substrate and would that be better for plants?

My gourami don't mind either way. Switched back to gravel is their tank because of my Amazon swords not loving sand. But all my other plants like the sand.

I did not full understand if you are putting the second gourami into the 10g with the other? If so they may fight bad. Even in my 36g I had three males and one of them almost got tortured to death before I saved him.

Right now I have the 2 gourami in the same tank, but I have a divider in place until I have the funds and the space for another tank for one of them. One gourami is much larger than the other, despite having gotten them at the same time. When I first got them, they mostly stayed away from one another, but after I re-arranged the tank almost a month ago, the larger one started nipping at the smaller.
The nipping issue between the two of them got bad enough that the smaller's pelvic fin was badly damaged. Therefore I separated them. I'd get them in different tanks now if my dorm allowed me more gallons per room.
