Does really play a big role in the growth of diatoms? I have my lights on for 6 hrs. and diatoms are still growing. So if I increased the photoperiod of my lights would that really make a difference?

Diatoms feed on excess silicates and silicic acid....they will typically disappear when the food source is depleted. If you continue to see brownish types of algae you have other issues. I'd give it some time. I'd base your photo period on your plants needs.
