Hello!
I have had fish tanks forever but have recently been having problems with my 110g tank. I had 2 fluvel filters and 1 stopped working (I'm thinking about purchasing the fluvel fx5 to replace both filters) and then my plecostomus died. I went and got another and then it too died. My other fish (red tail sharks/bala sharks) are happily swimming still. The tank has been cleaned in between but alway has this greenish hue to it I can't seem to get rid of. Also has cobweb type stuff that clings to the plastic deco plants that keeps coming back. The gravel looks to be clean but when I clean it it's a mess again. Any thoughts would be great! Thanks!

What are you using to clean the tank? A gravel vacuum? If you are using a vacuum then I would try to do a really thorough cleaning, you can do it in stages. Start on one side and really try to get down in the substrate.

The greenish hue is most likely an algae bloom. Do you have the tank near direct sunlight? What kind of lights do you have over the tank? The spiderweb stuff could be from excess food/waste that is decomposing. This could also be adding to the green water problem. Excess nutrients make algae go crazy.

Sounds to me like your filter breaking down caused a brief ammonia spike, which let a green water bloom take hold. You can look up methods of dealing with that, as there are several differ techniques that have been found to be effective.

I am using a vacuum on the gravel however I have a lot of it in the tank. The tank does not sit in direct sunlight but does sit under a window and has for years. I'm assuming it is due to the filters not working correctly so I'm hoping getting a new one will help fix the problem. I will also have to start shutting off the light for a few hours a day.
