Does up grading your filter cause your tank to cycle again?

I used an AngelsPlus fitter to seed my first tank and it cycled very quickly. I recommend them.

My boss has a canister filter and he's going to give me one of his sponges.

I put the sponge in my filter that my boss gave me and so far nothing. That was a week ago. I feel like I'm going to be doing daily WC's for the rest of my life.
