Okay so in about two months when my new tank is cycled I am 3 DP's. I know everything about them already it's just I need help with one thing. They need smooth sand since they are scaleless and can tear themselves up with any other substrate. When I clean the sand with my gravel vacuum how would I go about this? I don't want it all to get sucked up.

You just skim the vacuum above the sand. You might suck a little bit up but it won't be a lot.

You can have any type of substrate for puffers. Sand is preferred only due to easier maintenance.
