Also can you tell us when cleaning how we get the new water to the same temperature?

Have you done any water changes yet?

I would keep performing them every hour for the next couple of hours.

You have a 23litre tank so make sure you're removing around 10litres each time you do the water change.

Try to do this around 3 times tonight.

Then do this twice a day until your testing kit arrives.

Clean fresh water is going to help right now.

When doing a water change to the same temp you can get it roughly the same by testing it with your hand. Just add small amounts warm water to get it there.

All you can do is go by feel. Feel the water in the tank, then as you run the new water into the bucket (if that is what you're using) feel the water, they may not be exact but they'll be pretty darn close.

Just looked at the tetras and their blue stripes have faded n tummys are swelling :(

We have just done the water change should we get something to suck up all the dirt at the bottom in the gravel? and if so could any one recommend one to use?
Also we've had the water tested before doing this and there was a very small amount of ammonia in it but everything else was perfect.... We are now thinking that we have bought a sick fish?

Fish produce ammonia so the readings in the tank taken at the start don't mean anything now. The fish produce ammonia from breathing and producing waste. It will continue to rise until you do a water change or there is enough bacteria to consume the ammonia and convert it to nitrite. Nitrite is still as toxic as ammonia though.
