This morning I noticed my bettas fins were looking pretty bad from its finrot so I decided to look around online to find if there were any home remedies because im not able to go to the fish store any time soon. I found that if you put a 1/8 tsp for every gallon of water then it will cure the fish.

My betta is in a 2.5 gallon tank (with one red claw crab) so i would need to put 2/8 tsp. I decided to put in 1/4 of a tsp because im pretty sure that 1/4=2/8. Once i dropped the tee tree oil in the betta dropped to the bottom of the tank!

I realised that the tank wasnt completely full so 1/4 would be to much because there was less water. I quickly filled the tank to the top and now my fish seems to be doing a bit better, its just swimming slowly to the top of the tank and getting air then sinking down a bit.

Im also worried the tea tree oil might kill the crab or something so im moved him to the cup the betta came in with a little water in it and a piece of his favorite plant

What should I do!!!! Any help is appreciated!

Do you change the water often? I'm not one to use any type of remedies other than just frequent water changes.

I had just gotten the fish on wensday and I changed the water yesterday. I probably should have just continued to do freaquent water changes but i was really freaking out because no matter how much money or time I put into fish they never work out for me and my fish was sick yet again :(

Keeping fish is not about how much money or time you put into it, it's about doing the right thing, if all of us can do it, you can as well.
Starting a tank it's more than just filling it with water and putting fish in it.
At this point just keep changing water every couple of days or so and of course using water conditioner.
I'm not sure how to even guide you since there's not much to go by, are you using a filter, if so which one?
I get the feeling you have not cycled the tank?
This is the most important part of getting a tank going but I won't get into details of it since there is loads of information on line on that topic on this site and on line.

I did cycle the tank and I do have a filter. I got it a long time ago but im pretty sure it was a whisper filter or something
