I'm using a 100 micron filter sock in my sump on the water coming from the overflow box. I'd like to keep it clean, of course.

Do I need to replace it with a new one when it gets dirty or can I possibly throw this one in the washing machine?

If I can wash it in the machine... only run it by itself? Can I use any detergents or I just run through a cycle with just water?

I want to make sure I'm not going to introduce phosphates or nitrates or other chemicals in the process. The sock does get dark gray patches on it when it's been in the sump a week or so...

I have washed mine several time in the washing machine. Do it by itself with no detergents. I was told to do so by the LFS, and I have never had a problem.
my friend uses a small amout of bleach when he washes it.. after the wash he will rinse it several time by hand and then air dry..
