Filter upgrade question

I am planning on upgrading from a 10 gallon tank to a 35-40 gallon tank. For the time being is it ok to use a larger filter, for the 45 gallon tank in the 10 gallon until I can purchase the larger tank. Due to $$$ reasons I need to upgrade in steps, hopefully weekly.

Depending on the filter it may cause to much current. What kind of filter you looking to get.
