Aquarium Advice Freak
I haven't been particularly satisfied with my Whisper filter, and with the amount of waste in my shamefully overstocked tank, a bio-wheel was looking better and better with the amount of gravel-vacs I do.
But because my acrylic tank came as a kit with a couple inch strip of plastic molded around the perimiter, with spaces cut out specifically for the equipment it was sold with, I'd been having a hard time finding a filter that would fit in there, without having to do some jig-sawing.
But today I stopped at Petco (I know, I know, don't shoot) to pick up some fish chow, and bam, there it is. The Penguin MINI. I have no idea why I didn't come across this thing earlier (I think I'd been looking at the 125)....but I bought it, it fits (it fits!!), and it's happily bio-wheeling away.
Now a coupla questions:
1. Obviously the whisper filter was durn quiet. With the Penguin I've got a lot of splashing water noise....is this normal (should I prepare myself for midnight bathroom trips), or do I need to adjust the water level up?
2. Anybody have an idea on how long it takes to get the bio wheel cultured? I've got a couple more tank renovations planned, but I don't really want to send my tank into a re-cycle (and it's so hard to be patient!)
3. Could I combine my 2 smaller filters on a larger tank, rather than buying yet another (should I ever get my big tank)?
TIA guys!
