can gouramis and bettas be together in a 55 gallon tank?

Not normally recommended but a 55 is a lot of space so it may work out. Just have an escape plan ready for the betta if things don't work out.

I would not recommend it myself, but as Rich said there is a fair bit of room in a 55 so if you have a place for the betta should it not work out, you can give it a try.
