Im currently using a fluval u2 in a 10 gallon tank
it has java moss, and a couple other plants in it
im currently using a flourescent light source with a powerglo bulb
im adding in Nutrafin plant gro every week / monitoring with a iron test kit

In the Fluval U2 filter their is 1 foam pad on each side and behind that their is a finer white filter which is also attached to a carbon pad.
past that it leads into the biomax media.

Im wondering is their any point to having the Carbon portion in the filter
- is it taking out my Nutrafin plant gro
- can i just use the finer poly replacement next time without the carbon?

Carbon isn't needed IMO unless you're removing meds or just wanting to "polish" your water. Can't say if it is removing your ferts for certain, but it is possible.

IMO you can be. Some people have different opinions with it but I will say that I saw more growth after removing the carbon than when I still had it in. I would say remove it as long as you aren't using any medication (but that really should be done in a QT tank anyway).

k thanks, yea next time i do filter maintaince ill probably look at not using the carbon pads
