How different is it than your standard gravel substrate? Does it require more care? How do you clean the substrate? Do you just use a gravel vac and reduce the circulation so the sand doesn't get sucked up?
 
when i vaccuum I clean the top part of the sand.. thenI turn off the filter and stirr up the sand to get rid of air trapped..
when everything has settled again I turn the filter back on.
I'm not sure that it's what your suposed to do but it works for me.
 
depends on how deep it is, but generally stir the top 1/2 inch and suck debris from an inch above the floor. although i run a slight current along mine and this keeps the debris suspended and gets eaten up by mechanical filtration
