Hang over the back filter mods

Is there any info to put a splash guard of sorts on the water output of my hang over the back filter? I want to create less surface agitation. ALSO, can I just put a PVC elbow joint and a PVC pipe extension to put the filter intake on the other side of the tank. I hope this makes sense.

You can baffle the filter with a soda bottle or sponge
