Heater explosion

Had a heater start sparking and blew and it killed my fish I did not have gfci outlets and want to know if this would have stopped it from killing my fish because bow I am looking for a new heater and maybe some new outlets

Oh gosh I'm always worried about something like this happening! I'm sorry about your fish but thank goodness you weren't hurt. I wonder was it an older heater?
